Montaqu Rock

Montagu is a town of immeasurable beauty and character, situated about 180 km from Cape Town, on the border of the Breede River Valley and the Klein Karoo, surrounded by impressive mountains. Amongst climbers, the town and surrounding areas is best known for its amazing rock climbing. Montagu is one of the meccas for rock climbing in South Africa, and climbers from all over the world find their way here when visiting South Africa on a climbing trip. There are 602 bolted routes and impressive walls of Cogman’s Buttress.

From slabs to vertical walls to steep pump fests. There are 109 trad climbs, from single and double pitch routes to long committing routes on the huge Cogman’s Buttress, not forgetting The Green Pillar, our new back country 10-pitch adventure high up Keurkloof. So much awaits you! The climbing is scattered across many different crags over quite a large area, and you will always find something to suit your ability and style, whether you are a novice, a weekend warrior, or a seasoned climber looking for hard quality routes to send.

Besides the plethora of sport climbing, you will also find a growing number of the bigger walls. And all the time climbing in pristine mountain wilderness, with stunning views unfolding in every direction. If you are looking for a place with great climbing, excellent country-town living, scrumptious food, outstanding wines, friendly people and beautiful vistas in every direction, then you simply have to put Montagu on your destination list. And do not plan a one or two day stay! You will be sorely disappointed. Plan for a week or longer. You will not regret it.
